The Scaffold

2 Chronicles 6:13 KJV “For Solomon had made a brasen scaffold of five cubits long, and five cubits broad, and three cubits high, and had set it in the midst of the court: and upon it he stood, and kneeled down upon his knees before all the congregation of Israel, and spread forth his hands toward heaven.”.

You know there are words in the Bible that often throw you for a loop, and there is one here in the above verse that does just that. The word is “scaffold.” Now what is Solomon doing with a scaffold? If you look up this word it means a “furnace, a forging pot, or to pierce, dig out.” In the previous verse is says Solomon in the presence of the altar spread out his hands. It says he made this furnace, this brazen scaffold, and stands on it, kneels down, and spreads out his hands to GOD. In a furnace metals are purged, and dross is removed so that they come out pure.

The most interesting thing is that this brazen “scaffold” and the brazen altar have the exact same dimensions. An altar was for a sacrifice. Solomon I believe, got up via this scaffold or stairs to that brazen altar and started to pray with outstretched hands to GOD. This is a foreshadow of JESUS on an altar with hands outstretched praying as well, for all the world.

Solomon prays to GOD for 7 things on that brazen altar, and they are all about forgiveness. (After his prayer in 1 King’s 8, Solomon blesses the entire middle court and then offers the sacrifices there because the brazen altar was too little for all that was offered.) JESUS from a type of brazen altar (the furnace of CROSS, where the sins of the world were purged) called out and said “Father forgive them for they know not what they do.”

It is because of CHRIST’S sacrifice, that SALVATION is possible always. All that look to HIM will have eternal life. There is no other altar, no other scaffold, and no other sacrifice that is to be made. JESUS IS IT!
