The Coat of Many Colours

Genesis 37:3 KJV “Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours.

There was a song many years ago, and I have not heard it in a while but I sill remember it. It was a song by Dolly Parton called “Coat of Many Colours.” In this song she tells a story about Joseph and his coat, and how her mother made her a similar coat, and how she was made fun of for wearing it. Well you know sometimes GOD will speak though people and songs, and Dolly was not to far off from the truth in the words of that song.

You will notice many times how when GOD wants to talk about good or something very important he will not call Jacob by his nature as a deceiver, but GOD will call him “Israel.” This title means “GOD PREVAILS.”

If we look at the above verse it says “GOD PREVAILS loved to be joined, added to (the meaning of the name of Joseph), more than all his children. Have you wondered why? It says because he was the son of his old age.

Now old age is important. It’s important because as the body fails, the Spirit starts to increase, and so can it’s authority in our lives. The self can be smothered and can wither/die, but the Spirit can become strong, with more and more new life. This is why GOD’s power is made perfect in weakness, in humility, when carnality is at is lowest point or ability. One of these points, in a person’s life can be in old age. I will tell you there are more people that turn back to GOD in their old age and begin to fear and obey, I believe, than at any other time. I think this is with good reason. Their carnal strength is weak, and now GOD’s Spirit can really start to have sway with them. I am not saying this will happen in everyone. I have seen some stubborn, selfish, and evil old age people, but when death comes calling, oh, then most will cry out to GOD.

So now GOD PREVAILS, put on him a coat of many colours. You know I use to think this was actually a coat of colours. Like a coat of blue, yellow, purple, red, etc. It’s not that kind of coat. A coat is a covering. GOD PREVAILS put on HIS SON (Joseph, a type of JESUS) a COVERING of “many hands” it says. The word actually defines as spots, or stripes. You see Joseph or “joined/added” had added or joined to him many stripes, and spots that covered HIM. That was the coat that was put on HIM. So what do you think those stripes were?

Isaiah 53:5 says it quite clearly. “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.” The meaning here of stripes is not only of marks from wounds, but they are called clamps or couplings used to join curtains together. There were couplings used to join all the pieces of the curtains in the Temple together. There is nothing in that Temple that does not relate to CHRIST!

The coat of many colours was made by us, and our sin. Every spot, and speckle, and stain. JESUS wore that coat, and because of it we are healed. The Coat of MANY HANDS, many evil deeds, man’s righteousness, was worn, and in return HE gave us back a coat of pure white, unspotted, a lamb. HE took all the colours of man’s sin, and collected them into one. You can actually see this in nature. Pure white light when it’s separated spreads out into all the diverse colours like you would see in a rainbow, but when you bring them all together, undivided like through purity in JESUS, they form perfect white light.

A rainbow though is only the half, that we see. A rainbow is meant to be a perfect circle. We only usually see half. It is said in Job 11:5-6 KJV “But oh that God would speak, and open his lips against thee;  And that he would shew thee the secrets of wisdom, that they are double to that which is! Know therefore that God exacteth of thee less than thine iniquity deserveth.

JESUS is perfect wisdom, perfect white light, a perfect sinless lamb, who wore that coat of all the stain, and sins, and hands of the world to give us a new coat, HIS COAT of PERFECT RIGHTEOUSNESS.

All Glory and Honour is Yours Almighty Father Through Your SON, JESUS CHRIST!
