The Purse, Script, Sword, and Garment

Luke 22:36 KJV “Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.”

Well Thanksgiving is just around the corner for those in the USA and I was thinking about all the stuff I am grateful for. I came across this verse. This is what I am grateful for the most.

Jesus is about to be arrested and tried and crucified. He is with his disciples, and he says this verse. I could never quite understand what it meant until now. It’s about true sacrifice, HIS SACRIFICE.

He says let him that has a purse take it. JESUS is not talking about some person out there in the world. HE is talking about himself. HE is the one who is going to take the purse. The word here for purse can mean a cup of wine.

Likewise take his scrip. A scrip was used to collect food. It was used to carry bread or manna by the Jews in the wilderness. So likewise, his flesh, his bread.

And he that hath no sword. A sword here is a single edged sword. That edge is death/sin. JESUS would take that edge/sin for the entire world, HE would become the curse.

Sell his garment and buy a new one. JESUS would sell HIS garment of righteousness and buy our sin-stained garment. This gave us eternal life. Blessing for the curse.

So let he that has the cup let him take it, and likewise his flesh: and he that hath no sin/death, let him sell/barter his garment and buy eternal life! This is why we can’t buy and sell. Only JESUS could! HE sold HIS own garment to buy our Salvation. That is something no other person can do! EVER!

That is what I am grateful for. That I, a filthy sinner, received the undeserved garment of CHRIST.

Luke 22:37 KJV “For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end.”

Luke 22:38 “And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords (double edged-curse and blessing, death and life). And he said unto them, It is enough.”

All Glory and Honour is Yours Almighty Father through Your SON, JESUS CHRIST!
