Peter’s Sword and Ours

Luke 22:49 KJV “When they which were about him saw what would follow, they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword?”

I love watching birds. I find them to be the most beautiful of creatures. I see them daily at the boxes in front of my kitchen window. Now I have a variety of them that come especially now that the weather is colder. Some are crows of course and sparrows, and gackles. I see the occasional lark and then the dove is always around in the evening. The blue jays, though, beautiful to look at, are the bullies. They show up and send the rest scattering. You would think they owned the place or something. What a racket they kick up. They are demanding, and self-centered. It’s funny because the dove and sparrows have no problem sharing, but not these Jays. No way. They want it all, and just throw their weight around.

That brings me to the above verse. Christ is about to be arrested and of course the disciples want to prevent this from happening, in particular Peter. They ask shall we smite them with the sword? They want to scatter them all like the Jays that come to my boxes. Now what sword are they talking about? I don’t believe for one minute CHRIST allowed HIS disciples to carry weapons. They are talking about a different kind of sword. This sword comes from their mouth. David says in Psalm 57:4 “My soul is among lions: and I lie even among them that are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword.”

So what does Peter do? He takes out his sword. He takes out his best wrath and curses and lashes out at the High Priest’s servant, and smites his ear. Do you know what the ears are? They are balance, the ability to discern and to receive into the heart. They are part of the ability to be opened to the revelation of the HOLY SPIRIT. It tells us the name of that servant was Malchus, meaning Kingdom. Peter by his cursing, and his wrath of his words had cut off this servant in his ability to receive CHRIST.

What did CHRIST do? HE reached out HIS hand and healed him. One last act of kindness before the CROSS, to take away Peter’s sword. JESUS says if you take up that sword you will perish by it. Proverbs 18:21 KJV “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.” Death and life, good and evil come from the heart. James 3:6 KJV “And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.” The fire of hell and the world of iniquity is the tongue because it comes from the heart which is the pit. The heart only becomes heaven when JESUS changes it. Until that time James says

“But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.”

“And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.”

Ask GOD for a new heart for those who would employ strife, confusion, discord and much evil in the world. Don’t ask for punishment, and evil upon people. Pray for your enemies. Do good even when it’s hard. Even from the CROSS, JESUS asked for forgiveness for others. Should we do not less? Having the heart of CHRIST is this “wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.”

It’s easy to do good for good people. It’s not so easy when people and times are difficult. As a side note, the Dove despite those Jays comes back every day. We should be more like doves even when it costs us and there is a racket all around. I know because sometimes I just want to be like a blue jay and less like a dove.

Dear LORD help me to keep the sword in it’s place. Let me have more Heaven each day and less hell until there is no more death and only YOUR LIFE, until all the former things have passed away.

All Glory and Honour is Yours Almighty Father Through Your SON, JESUS CHRIST!
